October has two birthstones; Tourmaline and Opal. Tourmaline is the modern birthstone for October and is a favorite gemstone for many because it’s available in a rainbow of beautiful colors. Opal is the traditional birthstone for October Opal gemstones are truly unique because each individual gem is adorned with a one-of-a-kind color combination.
The name Opal has long been thought to have derived from the Latin word ‘Opalus’ meaning ‘precious stone’, and the Greek ‘Opallios’ meaning ‘to see a change in color’. In Ancient India and Ancient Persia, Fire Opal was admired as a symbol of ardent love; Ancient Greeks saw the stone as a talisman that protected against disease, and Arabian legends tell a story of how Opals fall to earth from the heavens during lightning storms.
Pink Tourmaline may vary in color from pale pink to deep red and is the rarest member of the tourmaline family. It has been said wearing Pink Tourmaline throughout the day helps release stress, worries, depression and anxiety. Pink tourmaline represents a love of humanity and humanitarianism.
